Weekendje weg in Belgium

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged about a restaurant in Amsterdam, and that’s in part because I spent the last weekend in Belgium doing the family thing. We cycled in the countryside, played hide and seek in the woods, and ate a lot of chicory. All very wholesome.

And for lunch we went to Cafe de la Foret in Jezus Eik, just southeast of Brussels. I don’t generally review restaurants outside Amsterdam (it’s a holiday from writing, as much anything else), but we were so taken with the moustachioed proprietor and his epic steaks that I decided to make an exception…

My brother and I shared the double rib of beef with bearnaise sauce, roasted chicory and chips. The steak almost had a pulse, the chips were crisp and fluffy, the bearnaise buttery and tart, and the chicory bitter-sweet. So very Belgian and so very good. If it were in Amsterdam, it would get five stars. As would my weekendje weg.
