Toilet Humour: 10 of the Weirdest Bathroom Signs in Amsterdam Restaurants
Toilets. Usually the most overlooked part of a restaurant, and one on which I seldom spend any time in reviews. The toilets rarely make or break places for me – I won’t downgrade them just because they’ve run out of loo roll or the dryer doesn’t work. But at the same time, a clean place to pee, a fresh towel, perhaps some fancy hand cream – well, it just shows attention to detail, doesn’t it? How many times have you returned to your table saying: “Those toilets smelt lovely!” or (more often, perhaps) “Those toilets were revolting!” or “You have to go take a look at the toilets – they have the weirdest sink ever!” or some such other bathroom-based remark? Toilets are important because all of us – whether we’re the Queen of the Netherlands or the local dustman – need to answer a call of nature every few hours.
This perhaps goes some way towards explaining this pet project of mine… For months, if not years, I’ve been collecting photos of the odd toilet signs I see in Amsterdam restaurants and bars. This final selection of 10 bears no relation to the quality of the food, the level of customer service, or even the cleanliness of the actual toilets. It is simply the result of my strange little brain, enjoying the simple pleasures in life – like inwardly giggling at a weird sign in a bathroom. Call it toilet humour, if you will.
