Ysbreeker: pre-theatre dinner

I’ve been a bit cultural lately. Having not been to the theatre for years, I went twice in the past week. The first show was a musical in Utrecht, and the second was Tanguera – a tango show – at the Carré. The story, as my thespian companion succinctly put it, was like a cross between Romeo & Juliet and Chicago. I’m not very good with plots (especially when there’s no dialogue, which there wasn’t) so I generally had no idea what was going on. If you love tango, though, it doesn’t matter.

Anyway, back to food. Before we made it to the Carré, we met for dinner a couple of blocks further down the Amstel at Ysbreeker. The last time I was there, I was a student, it was summer, and we were sitting outside having brunch – I had the feeling it was a regular grand café inside. Maybe it’s poshed-up a bit since then, but I loved the interior of Ysbreker on the cold, dark, rainy night that we we went this time. Huge stained-glass windows painted in a sort of art-deco nautical theme (maybe?!) adorned the top part of one wall, and the bar was a spacious affair like something you’d find on a Parisian boulevard.

We both ordered the same: it was called the choucroute special or something. The dish was served in a shallow earthenware bowl, with a thick layer of sauerkraut on the bottom. Nestled neatly on top were a sausage (and not your weird Dutch half-and-half sausage), a duck leg that had been confit-ed, and a thick slice of real hammy bacon. If that wasn’t heavy enough, there were skin-on potatoes tucked round the edges. Proper food for people who have had to cycle through the rain to get there.

It’s a little hard to judge this restaurant because I only had one course, and it happened to be the same dish as my thespian diner (this is rare – I usually make an effort to order something different, but the choucroute thingy just spoke to us). Main courses are around €20, which is high for somewhere with a café feel – but worth the extra. The house wine was decent and reasonably priced.

Possibly most tellingly, however, is that the place was jam-packed at 6.30 on a Tuesday evening. I’ll definitely be back – theatre or no theatre – and I’ll be making a reservation.
