New in de Pijp: L’Ozio

Saturday night I had one of those thingummies. You know: begins with D, ends with E, doesn’t happen often enough? And like most lucky chaps who have the (mis)fortune to date me, he got to experience the Highly Complex Reviewing Process: this generally involves me attempting to write notes whilst getting steadily more drunk and forgetting to take photos. The Amsterdam Foodie never stops working, ya know… And besides, it’s always something to talk about if there’s ever any awkward silences (which there generally aren’t, what with me and my ability to blather on…) (‘Yes. We know’, I hear you say.)

Anyway, L’Ozio seemed Italian-ly cool enough for a second date, so off we went. The décor was somewhat spartan: white-washed bricks with skylight windows, school desks for tables and no soft furnishings. Possibly not very romantic, but I kind of liked it.

We ordered the antipasti to share, along with a bottle of Barbera d’Alba. It was a 2008 so not as full-bodied as I expected it to be, and it left a faint if not unpleasant tingle on the centre of my tongue. Importantly, it went pretty well with the antipasti, which comprised salami, pancetta and two varieties of prosciutto, along with some olives, capers, raw garlic (avoided) and frissee lettuce. Oh, and some weird hot peppers stuffed with fish paste, which I wasn’t so keen on. The rest was fine, but I’d have preferred a mixture of meat, fish and salads, whereas this was very pork-centric (and that’s even for me).

Next, I had the personally recommended (by both the waiter and a review I’d read) Fettucine al Salmi’ di Cinghiale, which was essentially pasta with a wild boar sauce. The sauce was made lighter by the addition of finely grated carrot, and lightly spiced with what tasted like cinnamon. Yum.

The Dutch One had the ‘Meat of the day’: veal rivoltini stuffed with bacon and cheese, with a rich buttery sauce. It came with a side dish of roasted potatoes and vegetables, which all seemed to be rather good.

In true Vicky-date style, at the end of the meal we debated what rating I should give it. We both agreed that were a 3.5 possible in the database, it would be a fair reflection. But it’s not, so I have to make a choice. And I’m feeling generous. Must’ve been a good date then…
